Extended Recap:
Young Peter Parker (Max Charles) is innocently playing hide and seek with his father Richard Parker (Campbell Scott) when they find that his father’s home office has been broken into. Alarmed by the security breach, Mary Parker (Embeth Davidtz) grabs young Peter while Richard conceals his research into a briefcase and erases his black board. The three of them hurry into their family car. Mr. and Mrs. Parker leave Peter in the care of his Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) and Aunt May (Sally Field) under the impression that they will be right back to get him when it is safe to do so.
Fast-forward to a high school aged Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) who is a nerdy, skateboarding, intellectual outcast. At the school Peter tries to stop a kid named Eugene “Flash” Thompson (Chris Zylka) from bullying another student and ends up being beaten up by him in front of everyone. This continues until Peter’s classmate and crush, fellow intellectual Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) stops Flash and coaxes him into going to class.
Peter and Uncle Ben investigate a leak that has flooded the basement. Uncle Ben asks Peter to see if there is anything worth salvaging to be moved upstairs. Peter finds his father’s briefcase from the night his parents left him. Inside there is an algorithm, a pair of glasses and a photo of his father with Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans), among other things. After a simple web search Peter learns that Richard and Curt were working together in a cross species genetics lab at Oscorp and that the doctor still works there. He also finds an article about his parents being killed in a plane crash.
Peter sneaks into Oscorp pretending to be an intern and finds himself in a tour group led by Gwen. After meeting Dr. Connors, he bumps into Connors’ boss Rajit Ratha (Irrfan Khan) carrying a folder with the same symbol as the algorithm and follows him to a top-secret room. Inside he presses a button and finds himself covered in genetically enhanced spiders and one bites him on the back of the neck. On his way home from the lab he passes out on a subway train and wakes up with amazing reflexes, strength and a curious ability to hang upside down from the ceiling.
Peter compares Dr. Connors book to the algorithm and decides to visit him at home. He tells Connors that he’s Richard Parker’s son and offers to help with the algorithm.
At school the next day Peter uses his new abilities to humiliate Flash in the gym. He gets carried away and breaks a backboard dunking a basketball. Uncle Ben is called in to a meeting in the principal’s office and has to change work shifts. He tells Peter to pick Aunt May up from work since he will be at work late. Peter makes a rather awkward attempt to ask Gwen Stacy out.
After school he goes to an abandoned industrial building where he practices swinging from chains. At Oscorp Dr. Connors shows Peter his Ganali device. He explains that when loaded with an antigen it creates a cloud that can be dispersed over a neighborhood or a city. He shows him his attempts to regenerate the missing leg of a rat, using lizard DNA. Using the algorithm that Peter gave him, the two reach a successful trial with Connors’ drug.
Peter comes home to an angry Uncle Ben waiting for him on he porch who tells Peter to apologize to Aunt May for forgetting to pick her up from work. He gets into an argument with Uncle Ben and runs off into the night. Uncle Ben walks out looking for him.
Peter tries to buy milk at a convenience store but doesn’t have enough money. The clerk behind the counter (Michael Barra) gives him a hard time. A thief (Leif Gantvoort) standing behind him in line knocks something over at the counter to distract the clerk. He then grabs the money out of the open cash register, throws the milk to Peter and takes off with the money and a six-pack of beer. The clerk realizes what has happened and asks Peter to help stop the thief. Peter refuses to help and tells him that it is not his problem. The thief trips while running and his gun slides out of his pocket onto the ground right in front of Uncle Ben. There’s a struggle for the gun and it goes off shooting Uncle Ben in the stomach. Peter hears the commotion and runs over to Uncle Ben to help but it’s too late.
The police bring the photo from a sketch artist to Peter’s house to show him and Aunt May. They tell him the guy has a star tattoo on his left hand. Peter flashes back to the thief from the convenience store and remembers the same tattoo.
At school the next day Flash and Gwen make a point of expressing their condolences. An angry Peter goes out into the streets that night looking for the killer. He attacks a man that fits the description and provokes a gang of less than savory men. He manages to get away but falls though the roof of a building and accidently lands in a boxing ring. One of the men yells to him that he remembers what Peter looks like. At this moment Peter looks up to see the image of a luchador’s mask on the wall behind him that will inspire his Spider-man mask. He sews his costume and creates web-shooting devices. He uses Oscorp “super rope” for his webbing. He jumps off of a building to test the webbing and lands safely on the ground. At night he begins listening to a police scanner for descriptions of men who might be the killer.
We meet Captain Stacy (Dennis Leary) of the NYPD who describes Spider-man as a masked terrorist to another officer. Peter begins designing a more aerodynamic suit. He waits in a car for a thief to try and steal it. He ties the thief up with webbing and checks his arm for the tattoo, but no luck. The police arrive and try to catch Peter but he gets away.
At Oscorp Dr. Connors shows his boss Rajit Ratha (Irrfan Khan) the rat whose arm he has regenerated. Ratha threatens to pull the plug on Connors if he doesn’t move onto human trials immediately. Connors refuses and is shut down. At the high school Gwen asks Peter over for dinner. At Oscorp a very desperate Doctor Connors injects himself with the lizard DNA infused serum.
Peter arrives at the Stacy residence through Gwen’s bedroom window and Captain Stacy interrupts them. At Oscorp Dr. Connors’ arm starts to regenerate. He quickly starts having side effects and runs out to stop his boss before he can take the drug to the veteran’s hospital for human testing.
At the dinner table, Peter debates Captain Stacy about Spider-man’s intentions. Peter and Gwen walk out to the roof for some air. Peter shows Gwen that he’s really Spider-man and they share a kiss. Mrs. Stacy (Kari Coleman) interrupts and both Captain Stacy and Peter take off to respond to an emergency. On the bridge Dr. Connors has mutated into The Lizard and is attacking random bystanders, while trying to find his boss. A man tells Peter that his son is still in the car that is now hanging off the side of the bridge over the water. The car catches on fire and Peter works quickly to get the boy to safety. The man is reunited with his son and asks Peter who he is. To which he simply replies, Spider-man.
Down in the sewers Dr. Connors turns back into a human. Peter tells Gwen that he has to go after The Lizard. He tries to visit Dr. Connors at the lab and asks him what he knows about the giant lizard on the bridge. The doctor acts quite peculiar and excuses himself. Peter finds that the rat they tested the serum on has mutated and eaten another animal in the lab. He puts two and two together that The Lizard is really Dr. Connors.
Peter goes down to the police station to try and warn Captain Stacy of The Lizard’s true identity and how dangerous the situation is. After leaving the station, he sees a bunch of lizards moving into the sewer, figures out the Dr. is hiding underground and follows them. Peter and The Lizard face off for the first time and he barely makes it out alive. The Lizard finds his camera that has “Property of Peter Parker” written on it.
Peter goes to Gwen’s to tell her what happened. She cleans and patches him up. Peter takes responsibility for The Lizard’s actions. He takes Gwen on a web-slinging ride around the city. Dr. Connors becomes The Lizard again and goes to Peter’s high school to find him. They battle it out destroying a lot of the building in the process. Connors takes off back down into the sewers deciding that the human race is weak and stupid and plans to use the Ganali to infect everyone with lizard DNA. Peter follows trying to track and stop The Lizard. He asks Gwen to make an antidote at Oscorp.
Some police officers try to stop Connors. He infects them with his serum and continues onto Oscorp to get the Ganali. Peter warns Gwen that Connors is on his way and she evacuates the building. Peter is shot down with a taser by the Police and ends up face to face with Captain Stacy in his Spider-man suit. Peter tells him that he needs them to let him go so that he can help Gwen at Oscorp. One of the officers doesn’t hear the Captain’s order to stand down in time and shoots Peter, wounding him. Dr. Connors rips through a wall in Oscorp into the lab where Emma is hiding with the Ganali. He picks up the Ganali and leaves Emma unharmed. The antidote finishes and Emma retrieves it.
Meanwhile Spider-man is still trying to get across town to Oscorp but the news reporters fear he might not make it in his wounded state. The man whose son was saved on the bridge hears the news report. He turns out to be a crane operator and starts making calls to other workers in the city. Together they line up cranes to make a path that Spider-man can swing along to Oscorp. Peter sprays webbing over his wound and leaps off toward the building. Police on the streets even stop traffic to let him through.
Gwen runs out of the building and into her father on the street with the antidote. Captain Stacy takes the antidote and heads up towards the Oscorp roof to give it to Peter. Dr. Connors and Peter are in battle over the Ganali device, which is set to release the toxin within minutes. Captain Stacy gives the antidote to Peter and holds off The Lizard while Peter switches out the toxin for the antidote vile in the Ganali. As the antidote is released into the atmosphere, Dr. Connors starts turning back to normal. One of the beams on the top of the building crumbles and Peter almost falls off. Just then Dr. Connors reaches down and catches him in time.
Peter finds a dying Captain Stacy and tries to help him. With his dying breath, Captain Stacy makes Peter promise to stay away from Gwen so that Spider-man’s enemies don’t hurt her. Dr. Connors is taken into custody and the day is saved.
After Captain Stacy’s funeral Gwen goes to find Peter at his house. She confronts Peter for being the only one who didn’t attend the service. He tells her that he can’t see her anymore and she figures out that her dad made him promise to stay away from her. After she leaves, Aunt May convinces Peter that he’s good enough for Gwen. Peter listens to the last voicemail that Uncle Ben left on his cell phone and finds a little peace in his new reality.
At school Flash appears to have become friends with Peter and is sporting a Spider-man shirt. Peter shows up to class late and sits behind Gwen. The teacher comments on his punctuality and Peter promises he won’t be late again. The teacher tells him not to make promises that he can’t keep. Peter whispers to Gwen that those are the best kind and Gwen knows he doesn’t plan to honor the promise he made to her father. We are left with a slow motion scene of Spider-man swinging from his web over the city. The End.
Gotcha! In true Marvel film fashion there is an extra scene after the credits. Dr. Connors is in his asylum cell when a mysterious man appears out of thin air. The man asks Connors if he has told Peter about his father. Connors tells him that he hasn’t told him anything and implores the man to leave Peter alone. Sequel perhaps? Rumor has it in 2014 The Amazing Spider-man 2 will be released. When asked about the identity of the mysterious man Director Marc Webb replied, “It’s intentionally mysterious, and I invite speculation. I like this idea that Oscorp is this Tower of Babel. And every crazy thing in the universe somehow relates to Oscorp.”
P.s. As always there is also a Stan Lee cameo to look out for. During the scene where The Lizard and Spider-man battle at the high school, Stan Lee is shown as the school librarian listening to music on some pretty powerful headphones and completely oblivious to what is happening behind him. Enjoy :)
